PRESENTATION:
The College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Northern Colorado - 2025 New Building over $90 million Award

PRESENTED BY:

Andrew Grundstrom, PE
Principal - Dekker
Andrew is a licensed Professional Engineer with more than 20 years of experience in structural design and architectural coordination across medical, government, multifamily, education, and commercial projects. He has extensive expertise in a variety of building material and systems and is known for delivering practical, efficient solutions through strong multi-disciplinary collaboration.
As Principal-in-Charge for the UNC COM project, Andrew played a significant leadership role in guiding the structural design team and provided strategic oversight and ensured the structural systems aligned with the project’s architectural vision, sustainability goals, and budget.
Andrew has been a member of the Structural Engineers Association of New Mexico since 2007, serving on its Board of Directors from 2016-2021. He earned his degree in Architectural Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and has spent his entire professional career with Dekker.

Jennifer Greenleaf , PE
Studio Manager- Dekker
Jennifer is the Structural Studio Manager at Dekker with more than 20 years of experience in structural engineering. She has served as both lead structural engineer and project manager on a wide range of projects including K–12 and higher education facilities, hospitals, commercial developments, offices, casinos, and renovations. She is especially passionate about educational facilities and creating safe, inspiring environments for learning.
As Project Manager for the UNC COM project, Jennifer played a pivotal leadership role in guiding the structural team from concept through construction. She guided engineers and directed coordination with architects, contractors, and specialty partners to ensure the structural systems aligned with the project’s architectural vision, sustainability goals, and budget. Her leadership was critical in navigating complex challenges—including long-span systems, an open floor plan, angled façades, and advanced performance requirements—while maintaining quality, efficiency, and constructability.
Jennifer graduated from the University of New Mexico and is an active member of the Structural Engineers Association of New Mexico, where she has served on the Board of Directors in multiple leadership roles, including President.

Matthew Bauman, EI
Intern Structural Engineer- Dekker
Matthew is a structural engineer who joined the profession after graduating from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in May 2022. Since beginning his career, he has demonstrated strong technical ability and a thoughtful approach to structural analysis and design.
Matthew played a key role on the UNC COM project, where he designed the project’s highly complex steel structural system using ETABS. The building’s intricate geometry, long-span elements, and demanding performance requirements required detailed modeling, coordination, and analysis. His work was instrumental in developing an efficient, accurate structural model that supported the architectural vision while meeting strength, serviceability, and constructability goals.

Jeff Rosenberg
Senior Structural Engineering Associate- Dekker
Jeff Rosenberg began his career in the construction industry in 1981 and transitioned to structural engineering in 1992, bringing decades of hands-on construction and design experience to his projects.
Jeff led the design of the building’s complex foundation system, which included a partial basement and a large loading and service entry. The foundation utilized drilled piers and pier caps to support substantial loads, and his expertise ensured the system was both efficient and constructible while fully meeting the project’s architectural and structural requirements.

Alonso Marquez
BIM Studio Manager- Dekker
Alonso is the BIM Studio Manager at Dekker, bringing over 10 years of experience in building information modeling and structural coordination. He has consistently demonstrated exceptional technical expertise, leadership, and patience in managing complex projects and mentoring other technicians.
Alonso served as the Lead BIM Technician for the UNC COM project, where he skillfully navigated countless design changes with seeming ease. He coordinated the work of multiple technicians, ensured accurate and efficient modeling, and maintained a positive collaborative environment amongst the team.
DESCRIPTION:
The College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC COM) is a state-of-the-art, LEED Gold-certified facility designed to advance osteopathic medical education through innovative architecture, structural engineering, and sustainability. As the 43rd osteopathic medical school in the U.S., the building supports team-based learning and holistic healthcare training within an open floor plan featuring long-span structural systems, curved façades, and a striking commons space. Despite challenges such as existing foundation constraints, complex lateral design, and evolving architectural elements, close collaboration among the design-build team produced creative, cost-effective solutions that preserved the project’s bold vision. The result is a purpose-driven, sustainable landmark that sets a new architectural precedent for campus while supporting the future of healthcare education.
