PRESENTATION:

CLT Shear Wall and Diaphragm Design under the 2021 IBC

PRESENTED BY:

Mike Romanowski, SE
Regional Director [CA-South, AZ, NM] - Project Support Field Division at WoodWorks

DESCRIPTION:

The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in floor and roof assemblies has seen incredible growth in the US over the past decade.  However, its use as part of a lateral force resisting system – either as a shear wall or diaphragm – is only now starting to be codified in the 2021 IBC.  This has resulted in designers having to use an Alternate Materials and Methods Request (AMMR) approach under IBC Section 104.11 for CLT shear wall and diaphragm design or, in the case of diaphragms, using a code approved system over the top of the CLT, such as wood structural panels or a structural concrete topping slab.  This presentation will introduce the new provisions for CLT shear wall and diaphragm design contained in the American Wood Council’s 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS), as well as the new seismic design coefficients and factors (R, Ωo & Cd) for CLT shear wall design contained in ASCE’s 7-22 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures.

Zoom meeting information will be sent the day of the meeting.
